After patriotism, Samir Karnik moves to action-thriller
MUMBAI: Director Samir Karnik, who's "HEROES" has just hit the screens, is now set to make action movie "Formula No 44" with good friend Bobby Deol. "It's my first action-packed film. It would be my first thriller after a romantic film, then a film about man-child bonding and a travelogue. I think I need some physical action in my camera," Karnik said. The film stars Bobby Deol, who also featured in his critically acclaimed movie "Nanhe Jaisalmer".
The Deol family-starrer gets a new climax
The climax of Samir Karnik's Yamla Pagla Deewana starring Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby Deol was reshot. A source reveals the reason behind the decision, "A few weeks back, there was a screening of the film attended by the cast : Sunny, Dharmendra and Bobby Deol in Yamla Pagla Deewana
They felt that while the first half was strong, the climax needed to be tighter. Given the fact that initial promos have got a positive response, the makers didn't want to disappoint the audience. So, they've decided to re-do the climax."After getting dates from the lead actors for a few days, the entire climax was re-shot. The source adds, "After watching the trial, the makers felt the climax was quite weak. Samir got a new action director and shot the hilarious scene."Even though the cast approved the initial climax they felt that it was lacking in great action sequences. Sunny and Bobby Deol, who approved the new climax, thought it would make YPD more appealing.

A Heroes’ welcome from the Oscars

Director Samir Karnik is over the moon after he got an Oscars invite for a copy of the screenplay of Heroes for its archives. Karnik received the letter from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, informally known as the Oscars, late last week. An elated Karnik said, "I'm sending them the script right away. I can't believe that the Oscars archives has invited our screenplay. Maybe because it is an original screenplay; that's why they invited it. “The scripts in the Oscars collection are made accessible for research purposes to student filmmakers, writers and actors”.

"I was confient that we have a very good story in our hand and we also had a winning formula of Dharmendra , Sunny and Bobby Deol in our film but the biggest challenge was to translate the story into the film.

Long before Kyun! Ho Gaya Na became one of the most talked about films of the year, Samir Karnik was studying international relations in Washington, DC. He wanted to be a troubleshooter at the United Nations, solving international disputes. After completing his studies, he decided he didn't want to be a diplomat. He wanted to be in showbiz.
In 1996, he returned to Mumbai to pursue his dreams and joined Vidhu Vinod Chopra as an assistant director on Kareeb. "Whatever I learnt about international relations was a waste," Karnik told News Editor (Entertainment) Syed Firdaus Ashraf.
After Kareeb, Samir got an offer to run a television station in Tanzania. "I chilled out in Dar-es-Salam (the capital of Tanzania). I did a lot of exciting things. But after four years, I told myself this is not what I was supposed to do. I left my studies to become a director. So what happened to that dream?" he recalls.
